It 'a beautiful place to rest and refresh yourselves contemplating the landscape in some good restaurant like the Osteria il Teatro ... like, for example, specialized in exquisite Tuscan cuisine ...
Cortona was one of the twelve Etruscan cities. The primitive cyclopean walls can still be seen, incorporated with imposing sections of medieval walls. Apart from a few fine Renaissance palaces, the prevailing character of Cortona's architecture is medieval, conferring it’s steep narrow streets a suggestive atmosphere. Regarding the elevated position (600 meters above sea level) a wonderful view of the entire Valdichiana can be admire from Cortona.
Worth visiting: the medieval churches of St. Francesco, S. Domenico and The Palazzo Casali with its medieval renaissance facade, the churches of S. Maria Nuova and San Niccolò, with their precious works of art.
The "Via Crucis" by Severini (twentieth century) accompanies the mystic ascent linking the town overlooking the shrine of St. Margaret, in turn dominated by the imposing structure of the Fortress of Girifalco.
Out of town several Etruscan tombs and Roman churches. The Convent of Le Celle, founded by St. Francis, is one of the most evocative of the area.
