Situated within the wide area of confluence of the Tures-Aurina valley, at a height of 835 m. sea level, surrounded on one side by the Zillertal Alps, which reach 3000 meters and the extraordinary rock formations of the dolomites on the otherside.
It’s the center of the Val Pusteria.
The medieval heart of the city, with its rows of picturesque buildings, the city walls in part preserved and, in them, the city gates, which testifies the importance of this alpine town - with its current 12,000 residents, as in medieval times.
We suggest a walk in the picturesque medieval characteristic Central Street, with its four city gates and interesting frescoes. The eastern gate leads into the Via Rage di Sopra, dominated by the Sternbach palace.
In the parish church one can admire the precious crucifix of Michael Pacher (the largest late Gothic painter and sculptor) and the Mathis organ, the largest in South Tyrol, built in 1983.
The castle is very characteristic, situated on a hill above the city and easily accessible. From its privileged position it looks at the old town as if still watches over the lives and safety of the citizens, as in past centuries.
From Brunico, the fantastic mountain world of the Dolomites is opened for hikers, the Aurine Alps and the glaciers of the Venediger group, with well-marked trails and an adequate amount of shelter.
Walks, easy hiking or climbing to the summit, even climbing on the Dolomites or on snow-covered glaciers. Trail maps are available in the tourist office of Brunico.
For downhill skiers don’t miss a day on the slopes at Plan de Corones.
