Between torrent rocks and chasms: the Orsomarso

Geologically similar to the massif of Pollino, Mountains of Orsomarso constitute the extreme ramifications of the Apennines, now entirely within the limits of the Pollino National Park. Discovered only in recent years by scholars and fans, for its great variety of landscapes, very deep valleys, sharp peaks, dense forests and rocky canyons, this area is the most wild and mysterious of the Apennines. The northern part of the mountain range is enhanced by the presence of two valleys of extraordinary beauty, the valley of the river Lao and Argentino, both recognized for some time of great natural value, to be inserted between the fifteen present Natural Reserves in Calabria. To see: the monumental towers Pietra Campanara and Crivo dell' Uomo Lungo,the relief of mountain ranges of Mount la Mula and Mount Palanuda Caramolo, Piani di Novacco ideal places for cross-country skiing. At the center of the massif rises the spire of the Cozzo del Pellegrino, the highest peak of the Group (1987 meters) from the rocky summit of which you can admire the whole valley of the river Abatemarco, surrounded by virgin forests and the deep blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Going to the south is the mountain range of Monte la Mula, from the top of rounded and devoid of vegetation and the long and steep ridge of Mount Montea, including vertical walls, sharp peaks and forests of young pines Loricate; on its slopes there is Pietra Portusata, monumental rock monolith, arched shape. After the spectacular gorge of the River Rosa reaches the southern border of the mountains, marked by rocky bastion of Monte La Caccia, standing almost vertically on the mighty sea. For the more adventurous, near Laino Borgo and the fascinating medieval town of Laino Castello, you can begin the great adventure of discovery of the Lao river, majestic river in its upper part, between Laino Papasidero, rushing between smooth sides of rock overhanging the bottom of a narrow rocky canyon. With the support of local guides, you can try the thrilling experience of rafting, canoeing or walking down this beautiful stretch of river that has hosted several competitive tests.
