BREATH OF FREEDOM ON SUBASIO MOUNT
filled by Giulia
A green and yellow ‘panettone’ that changes color depending on the season ... Crosing it, is a unique experience in the car, the track that seems to come up to the clouds, here are low low ... It’s considered the Park of San Francisco as the whole mountain is rich with Franciscan memories, of hermitages, refuges in which the brothers of the poor man of Assisi gathered in prayer. On the lower part are olive trees, amid hardwood forests, holm oak and beech forests and high mountain pastures. The regional park includes Mount Subasio, the highest peak of Assisi. The roads leading to the Park are essentially links between the historical towns of Assisi, Spello, Nocera and Valtopina with the smaller towns located on the slopes. Villages that seem cribs. These roads are primarily touristic connecting the center of the city of Assisi - Porta Cappuccini – to Eremo , the Abbey of St. Benedict and the summit of the Mount. Also from Assisi, and precisely at Port Perlici passing first by the SS. 444 and then turning right, is home of the park - Ca 'Piombino and continuing the drive up the Costa di Trex, arriving to Spello first touching the smaller historic centers of Armenzano,, St. Giovanni and Collepino. Important is the road between Assisi and Spello apical and follows the ancient path of gravel. This road is very scenic, is frequented by tourists to reach the meadows of the summit of Stazzi on the slopes of Assisi and the sanctuary of the Madonna della Spella at Spello. Also along this route is found the Mortaro Grande and the Mortaro piccolo, dry sinkholes located near the top of the mountain, used in past centuries, to produce the ice compressing the snow and keep it until the summer. Alongside this main road, travelling by car, with the limitations on the summit road imposed by the requirements of environmental protection, you will reach a series of paths that may be made on foot or on horseback, starting mostly from the villages of Costa di Trex Armenzano, San Giovanni and Collepino, which allow you to reach the top of the meadows. Squirrels, foxes, weasels, porcupines, badgers and wild boar may suddenly appear in your pictures ... A paradise in which to lost in ... and run free under the clouds.
